Women Weavers OnLine

Ben Smim

This is Khadija Boodan, who made the two flatwoven rugs below and the three pillows that follow them. She has never married and lives with her sister and elderly mother; their father is dead. They have married brothers, but earn their own living. Khadija works on the land of others, both in the village and outside it. She does day labor, like weeding or picking fruit. She used to weave but does not any more because the rugs don't sell locally, something we heard from other women as well. Hopefully that will change.

Piece 3.12936 is in a rich dark red with design stripes in white that contain touches of red, forest green and a rich yellow. You can see the whole rug here; it is also decorated with sequins. Khadija made it about 10 years ago, and it only took her about two months, even though she also had to do housework. Her mother prepares the wool for her, which helps. This is about 6' x 10.5' and costs $435.
