Women Weavers OnLine

Ben Smim

Most of the pieces on this page were woven by Heda Khoya Ali, a friend of Aicha from the previous page.

Piece 2.12329 is a flatweave that looks mostly black and white from a distance, but which has lots of colors that you can see in this detail. They include accents in turquoise, green, yellow and bright orange, with sequins, plus acrylic fringe in green, white and turquoise. The size is 4'1" x 10'4" and the price is $480.

Piece 2.12344 is a pillow with the overall diamond design - you see a detail here. If you click it, you can see the color accents of golden yellow, red, blue, brown and turquoise on the three white diamonds, plus the sequin decoration. To see the full pillow, click here. The back is a blue-red with a bit of a design. It measures 14 1/2" x 21" and costs $45.

Pieces 2.12340a (on the left) and b (on the right) can be purchased as a pair or separately. You see a close-up here, and can see it larger by clicking it. To see the full pillows, click here. The colors are black and white with pink and gold accents and some sequins. There is also some fairly wild pink and blue fringe, which is limited and mainly on the edges, so could be taken off without harming the structure of the weaving. The backs are plain turquoise with a bit of metallic gold thread. Each measures 15" x 23" and costs $41.

Piece 2.12555 was made by Fatima Sookar. She didn't want her photo taken, but said we could mention that she has three children, an older son and daughter plus a younger son. The daughter is in her teens and embroiders but does not know how to weave. If Fatima sells this pillow, she would use the money to buy food for her family, or perhaps tennis shoes for a son or put it toward a gold bracelet for her daughter. The pillow is mainly black and white with red highlights on the face, seen better in this detail. It has a black back with white designs that remind me of snowflakes. The size is 17" x 20" and it costs $48. SOLD but she could make more.

Piece 1.12545 is a small pillow that Kebira Outalb had made for her. Although she weaves, she only knows how to do a pattern of simple stripes. This pillow is much more complicated. It has more colors than most, including dark red, forest green, tan, black, white and brown. On the close-up you can see the brown and blue outlining the large diamond on the lower left, which is a color combination found in some old rugs and rarely seen today. You may also note that some red has run onto the white design - it will be fixed (with chlorox) before the pillow is sent. The back has stripes in dark red, blue, black and forest green. This pillow is already stuffed with wool, as rural people do, and will be sent that way. The size is 11.5" x 16" and the price is $56.
