DAY 01   JUNE2            SATURDAY                   CASABLANCA – FES

Arrive from the US to Casablanca.  You will be met by our Moroccan guide and drive approximately 3 ˝ hrs. east to the fascinating city of Fes, the oldest intact Islamic city in the world.  It is the religious and intellectual capital of the country.  After checking into our hotel, we’ll meet for lunch and Susan will review the program for the coming days.  After lunch, our Moroccan guide will take us on an orientation drive round the city and to visit the shop of the Ben Cherif weaving family.  They have been weaving luxurious textiles since the late 1800s; their name on a fabric denotes elegance.  Dinner will be at the hotel.
HOTEL MINZAH ZELAGH                       LD

DAY 02   JUNE 3           SUNDAY                       FES – BEN SMIM - FES

Today we’ll drive a short distance out of Fes to the tiny village of Ben Smim for weaving, spinning and carding demonstrations by local women.  A rug exhibit is planned, displaying the talents of the women of the village.  There is also a small co-op to visit here, producing excellent herbal products—soaps, lotions and dried herbs for cooking.  We’ll take a delightful 20 minute walk along bucolic country paths, past lush fields and flowers, with goats and sheep and birds to serenade us.  We arrive at the farmhouse of Susan’s friends Habiba and Khalid and their parents, where lunch is prepared for us of delicious local fare.

After lunch we return to the city and begin our visit of Fes.  We go into the medina (old town), a labyrinthine UNESCO World Heritage site of narrow streets filled with artisans and cafes, stall after stall filled with jewelry, woodcarving, pottery, piles of spices and dried fruit and a myriad of other products.  A visit to the last working drawloom in Fes is the afternoon highlight.  Dinner is on our own, with suggestions by the guide.
HOTEL MINZAH ZELAGH                       BL

DAY 03   JUNE 4           MONDAY                      FES

After breakfast, we continue our sightseeing in this mystical city, including a visit to the Artisanat, a display of all the crafts of the country.  Free time for your personal exploration in the afternoon.  Lunch and dinner are on our own.
HOTEL MINZAH ZELAGH                       B

DAY 04    JUNE 5          TUESDAY                     FES

We spend the day in the medina, visiting the fascinating tanneries where men toil in the vats of dyes as in ancient times.  We’ll hear the clacking of floor looms before we see the men working them, deep within the walls of the medina, producing beautiful scarves and lengths of cloth which can be purchased at excellent prices (think gifts!).  Each neighborhood has a mosque, a pubic bath house (hammam), a fountain, a bakery and a Koranic school for young children—we’ll see it all, including kids playing in the narrow streets and women in their jellabas (long robes) shopping for ingredients for meals.  Lunch will be in the medina in one of the marvelous local restaurants.  Dinner is on our own.
HOTEL MINZAH ZELAGH                       BL

DAY 05   JUNE 6           WEDNESDAY                FES – SEFROU – FES

This morning we drive about an hour outside Fes to the town of Sefrou.  Susan’s friend Amina Yabis runs a women’s co-op that makes djellaba (long robe) fabric and rugs.  Her specialty is needle weaving buttons and making jewelry from them; some of you may have seen her displaying them at the Folk Art Market in Santa Fe.  We may have an opportunity to try these techniques ourselves!  The women will prepare lunch for us and we continue the interesting dialogue which always ensues about our different cultures, education, health, etc.

We return to Fes and continue sightseeing of the gorgeous bronze doors of the King’s Palace, stroll through the Jewish quarter next door and visit some fabric stalls owned by the same families for decades.  We enter the medina through a different gate and find ourselves once again in the enticing atmosphere of the busy medina.  Our day ends with a visit to a pottery workshop, to see how the famous Fes pottery is made.  There are many lovely items for sale.  Dinner is on our own.
HOTEL MINZAH ZELAGH                       BL

DAY 06   JUNE 7           THURSDAY                   FES - MARRAKECH

We bid farewell to Fes and begin the approximately 7 hour drive south to Marrakech, with several stops for lunch and lavatories.  We arrive in this world famous city, often called “Marrakech the Red” due to the soft red color of almost all the buildings.  With it’s backdrop of the High Atlas Mountains, often snow-covered, it is a stunning setting.  We’ll have an orientation drive around the city and, time permitting, have a stroll through the famous Jma el F’naa Square.  It is like stepping back 2000 years, with storytellers, snake charmers, whirling dervishes, acrobats, musicians, purveyors of herbs to cure your ills….and so much more!  We check into our hotel and have dinner at the hotel.  Lunch is on our own.
HOTEL GOLDEN TULIP             BD

DAY 07   JUNE 8           FRIDAY                        MARRAKECH

After breakfast, we begin our day with a visit to the exquisite Majorelle Gardens, purchased and renovated by the late French couturier Yves St. Laurent.  We’ll spend the entire day strolling through the medina, so different from that of Fes.  It is still filled with artisan stalls, antique shops, cafes, etc. but has a flavor all its own.  We’ll visit the museum of Dar Si Said, featuring many crafts from the country and the private collection of Bert Flint, a Dutch art historian who collected artifacts from the rural areas, including rugs, caftans, tools and jewelry, housed in a charming renovated riad (former private home).  Lunch will be in the medina.  Dinner is on our own.
HOTEL GOLDEN TULIP             BL

DAY 08   JUNE 9           SATURDAY                   MARRAKECH

Today is free for you to explore on your own, or with our guide.  Later in the day, Susan will take whoever is interested to the rug auction deep in the medina where merchants buy and sell rugs from all over Morocco.  Lunch and dinner are on our own.
HOTEL GOLDEN TULIP             B

DAY 09   JUNE 10         SUNDAY                       MARRAKECH-CASABLANCA
